Energy-Saving Tips for the Home
By Kyle Patterson, Consultant to the United States Environmental Protection Agency's Energy Star Program
While reducing energy in our office buildings is very important, the EPA recommends that each of us do a bit more. At the end of the work day we return to the place where we have our greatest impact on energy consumption, our home. Choosing energy-efficient products and using energy wisely in our homes not only reduces our domestic energy bills, but also decreases the amount of unnecessary pollution that is released into our atmosphere.
We should all do our part to reduce wasted energy use, whether it's at the office or at home. With today's increased energy price volatility and ongoing environmental and political concerns, it's more important than ever to control our home energy use. After all, money isn't all you're saving.
Lights
Replace incandescent light bulbs with Energy Star compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). CFLs can save as much as 66% of the electricity used by incandescent lamps and last 10 times longer.
Turn off interior and exterior lights when not needed. Install sensors for exterior lights.
Reduce the wattage of the lamps located in your home where possible.
Heating and Cooling
Install programmable thermostats.
Add new weather stripping and caulk around your windows and doors to reduce drafts.
Insulate HVAC ductwork that is located within unconditioned spaces.
During cool seasons, keep window treatments open during times when the sun is shining and closed at night. During warm seasons, keep window treatments closed during times when windows are exposed to direct sunlight.
Plant shade trees and shrubs around your house.
Appliances
Energy Star labeled appliances use less energy than other products. By replacing your home appliances with Energy Star labeled appliances, you can potentially reduce your energy bills by 30%.
Load dishwashers and clothes washers to full capacity to conserve energy and water.
Use cold water whenever possible during rinse cycles. It doesn't affect the cleaning quality and uses less energy.
Insulate hot water heater piping within 10 feet of the hot water heater.
