HARBORSIDE BY MACK-CALI WELCOMES PIGGYBACK BAR
Jersey City, New Jresey—August 30, 2017—Mack-Cali Realty Corporation announced today that Piggyback Bar will open Thursday September 21, 2017, at Harborside, Mack-Cali’s recreated one-of-a-kind cultural district situated on the Jersey City waterfront. The restaurant, owned by chef Leah Cohen and partner Ben Byruch, will serve a menu of elevated American bar fare fused with Asian flavors.
Harborside, a vibrant, transit-oriented, cultural district that blends premier offices, luxury living, locally inspired shopping and dining, and open public spaces, offers an ideal location for Cohen and Byruch’s latest restaurant project. As the owners of Pig and Khao, which has served Southeast Asian cuisine on the Lower East Side for the past five years, the duo is excited to bring their newest venture to Jersey City.
"We have been looking to expand our brand outside of New York City; Harborside in Jersey City was a logical choice since it is so close to the city and is a beautiful area with amazing views,” said the pair. “After learning more about the area we were totally sold on Jersey City for our next venture."
Piggyback Bar’s menu includes signature dishes such as Mussels with Chinese sausage, Dashi broth and fried Mantao buns; Mapo Chili Dog topped with crispy shallots and scallions; and Korean Gochujang Honey Butter Wings. The menu is complemented by a list of Asian-inspired cocktails, an extensive beer selection and a list of wines by the glass. The restaurant, with direct NYC views, will span a total of 6,000 square feet with a 1000-square foot bar that seats 50, a main dining room that will host a maximum of 100 guests, and a 1,600-square foot outdoor area that seats 100.
“Harborside is a major driver helping to transform the face of the Jersey City waterfront, and we’re thrilled to have partners like Piggyback Bar as an anchor for its continued growth,” said Michael J. DeMarco, chief executive officer of Mack-Cali. “We love style and talent and Leah and Ben bring a ton of that to the table. Their approach of superb food in a great atmosphere will make them a greater success.”
Harborside’s transformation will continue throughout 2017 and 2018, including: additional restaurant openings; The Marketplace, which will house a range of diverse dining options as well as entertainment and cultural events at the Lutze Biergarten and the Atrium at Harborside.
Mack-Cali has reimagined Jersey City’s waterfront with the creation of Harborside, a one-of-a-kind cultural district that blends premier offices, luxury living, locally inspired shopping and dining, and public spaces for the community to enjoy.
By investing in office renovations, amenity upgrades, and public infrastructure improvements, and by attracting a diverse mix of upscale restaurants and retailers, Mack-Cali is continuing to transform Harborside into a true destination – one that harnesses the distinctive character of Jersey City while cultivating its own unique arts, dining, and lifestyle scene.
Against the backdrop of New York City’s famed skyline, Harborside is a major crossroads for transportation, including the Exchange Place PATH station, the Harborside Light Rail station, and a brand-new NY Waterway ferry terminal, allowing for unsurpassed access between Midtown and Lower Manhattan and the greater New Jersey Gold Coast.
Currently, Harborside spans 4.3 million square feet along the waterfront – with an additional 1.2 million square feet planned – including class A office and retail space in addition to Jersey City Urby, the unmistakable 69-story apartment tower designed for the contemporary urban renter.
